Movie Review: "Star Trek"

As faithful readers of this blog know, I am a HUGE Star Wars geek. I have never sat down and watched a full episode of Star Trek in my entire life. I've got bits and pieces of the original series, Next Generation and Enterprise. But for some reason they never seemed to capture my fancy, they seemed rather cheesy to me. So when I heard they were rebooting the series with a movie version with a younger version of the original cast, forgive me if I didn't sound too excited. But then I heard JJ Abrams of Lost was going to be directing the movie. And then the cast was going to include John Cho, Simon Pegg and Karl Urban. My interest began to peak. Then I saw the teaser trailer. I started to get excited and was thinking about seeing it over the summer. But it wasn't until the reviews and the reactions starting coming in that I really wanted to see it. I mean both my sisters saw it twice and were raving about it. Finally one weekend, I caved and saw it.

I LOVED IT. Seriously, it was one of THE best movies I have seen in a VERY long time. I had more fun seeing Star Trek than even the last Indiana Jones movie (and that's saying A LOT for me - maybe not for you, but trust me). The storyline was absolutely excellent. Just really well written with a really good plot. You can tell it's JJ Abrams from his signature Lost trademarks (ie time travel heh). The young cast does very well from what I can tell. I'm not a huge Chris Pine fine but he did very well as a young Kirk. I cried at the beginning of the movie, the scene with his father. I LOVED Zachary Quinto as young Spock. I adored Spock's character in this movie. This movie made him more human, showed his feelings, his relationships with his parents. I personally liked the interaction with Uhura. It totally makes sense with the ending of the movie. The rest of the cast is great too. Karl Urban no longer looks like Eomer (actually he looks more like Matt LeBlanc) and does a great job as Bones. Loved Simon Pegg as Scotty, he was hilarious. And John Cho? Excellent as always. Eric Bana is unrecognizable as Nero, which was great. The action sequences are really great, believable even though they took place in space. There wasn't a single cheesy bit in this entire movie. Honestly I'm so glad I saw this movie. If there is a sequel I will see it. This was probably one of the best movies I have seen all year. While it may not have turned me into a Trekkie, it sure has come close.

That being said, I'm not sure about this poster. While it's great they chose Sulu and Checkov on here, why not Bones and Scotty too? Granted I probably chose the one poster that features those two.

  1. I'm glad you liked the movie! My husband's gone to see it twice.

  2. Time travel is a trademark of Star Trek too. There are numerous episodes that rely on it extensively, as well as a movie or two.

The original series is unbearably cheesy and the first couple of seasons of the Next Generation were pretty bad too, basically because Gene Roddenberry's middle name was cheddar. After he passed away, the series took on a harder edge and allowed character development and a continuing story line, so things got considerably more interesting.

Not that I'm a true Trekkie either; TNG is my favourite and I still haven't seen all the episodes. But I agree with you on the movie; it was a lot of fun. It was weird seeing Uhura with an edge, but I'm not enough of a purist to be offended.

  3. I loved this, too! My husband is a big Star Trek fan and I've enjoyed Next Generation and Voyager since I met him. I have to say that this new Captain Kirk does it for me! He was eye candy and I loved every second he was on screen. I also liked the Scottish character whose name escapes me. I will be first in line for the next installment. I don't know how old this new Captain Kirk is, but I don't think I'm old enough to be his mother yet, so it's not creepy, right? :)

  4. I was disappointed at first, but it's grown on me:-) Spock and Uhura still bug me, but I see it in the old series now...

still wish they'd given Scotty a larger role and cut Chekov's, since he wasn't in the original series until season two!
